Theory of Machines Miscellaneous

  1. A rotating disc of 1 m diameter has two eccentric masses of 0.5 kg each at radii of 50 mm and 60 mm at angular positions of 0° and 150°, respectively. A balancing mass of 0.1 kg is to be used to balance the rotor. What is the radial position of the balancing mass?
    1. 50 mm
    2. 120 mm
    3. 150 mm
    4. 280 mm
Correct Option: C

Along x-axis, 0.5 (–60 × 10–3 cos 30° + 50 × 10–3) ω² = 0.1ω²
× x × 10–3
∴ x = –9.8076 mm
Along y-axis, 0.5 (60 × 10–3 sin 30°) ω² = 0.1ω² y
∴ y = 150 mm
∴ r = √x² + y² = 150.32 mm
