  1. In an examination 75% candidates passed in English and 60% passed in Mathematics. 25% failed in both and 240 passed the examination. Find the total number of candidates.
    1. 492
    2. 300
    3. 500
    4. 400
Correct Option: D

Failures in English = 100 – 75 = 25
Failures in Maths = 100–60 = 40
Failures in both subjects = 25
Failures in English only= 25 – 25 = 0
Failures n Maths only = 40 – 25 = 15
Failures in one or both subjects = 25 + 15 = 40
Percentage of successful = 100 – 40 = 60
Let total students be x

∴ x ×
60
= 240
100

⇒ x =
240 × 100
= 400
60
