The current director is Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty. It has an integrative research center for nuclear and engineering-related research.
Role of BARC
1. They discover the peaceful application of nuclear energy, basically in the area of power generation.
2. It handles all research related to nuclear power generation which includes, theoretical design of reactors, computerized modeling, and simulation, risk analysis, development, etc.
3. It conducts research on spent fuel processing, safe disposal of nuclear waste, medicine, isotopes in industries, agriculture, etc.
Achievements of BARC
1.BARC has set up five Multiple Power Reactors successfully till date.
2.BARC develop India’s first Pressure Heavy water Reactors with 80 MW capacity at Kalpakkam.
3. BARC develops a Fast Breeder Test Reactor to produce more fuel when it runs rather than consume. India is the seventh country that develops a fast breeder test reactor.
4.BARC and Defence Research and Development Organization develop KALI (Kilo Ampere Linear Injector), it is a high-speed electron gun which is used, target enemy missile system.
5. BRAC develops technologies to clean water and find flow paths to groundwaters.
6.BRAC develop solution for solid waste management
