The full form of BIS is Bureau of Indian Standards. It is the national standard body in India that prepares and implements standards, certification schemes for products and systems.
It was formed on 23 December 1986 under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986. It is headquartered in New Delhi and it has 20 branch offices and 5 regional offices in India (Chandigarh, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi). Parmod Kumar Tiwari is the current director-general of BIS.
BIS has 25 members from central or state government, research institutions, industry, and consumer organizations.
Objectives
1. To promote growth and development of Indian industry, export and commerce.
2. To promote quality control and standardization.
3. To promote balanced development of standardization associated with marking and quality certification.
Function of BIS
1. Provide certification licence for foreign manufacturers.
2.Certification mark for Indian importers.
3.Formulation, recognition, and promotion of the Indian Standards.
4.Product certification for some products like drinking water, LPG cylinder, etc.
5.Consumer affairs activities.
6.Laboratory Recognition Scheme.
7. Provide training on national and international levels.
